Evaluation: Question 1

In this clip i have annotated our thriller opening 'Two Minds' in terms of what aspects we have  followed from a conventional film opening and title sequence. Before we created our opening we did some research and looked at these forms and conventions.

The Forms & Conventions of Film Openings:

  • Leaves us asking questions about what will happen
  • Shows us the title sequence
  • The company identity and logo
  • Title of the film
  • An introducing to the main character
  • An introducing to the setting/location
  • Communicates the genre to the audience
  • Narrative/storyline/plot introduced
  • Intertexuality - references
  • Classic opening structure, narrative opening, discrete, stand alone titles
  • Music/sound, creates mood and atmosphere
The Conventions of the title sequences:

A title sequences has a conventional order itself and the things to consider in these sequences are the types of fonts commonly used, the use of transitions and effects, the use of colour, and the pace and flow of the titles. The order is based on contractual dealings (who is the most important). The film name usually appears after the mega stars, however in our thriller opening we decided to put our title at the end as it created a more dramatic effect. It made sense to put ti at the end as it flowed with the opening and showed suspence....If there are no mega stars, the title of the film follows the distribution company.

Here is the conventional order of a title sequence:

  • Production Company Identity
  • Distribution Company Identity
  • Distribution Company Title
  • Production Company Title
  • Actor 1 (Star!)
  • Actor 2 (Star!)
  • Film Title
  • Actor 3
  • Actor 4
  • "
  • "
  • "
  • Casting
  • Costume
  • Music Supervisor
  • Music by
  • Edited by
  • Production Designer
  • Director of Photography
  • Executive Producer
  • Written by
  • Director

This is the Title sequence of our opening. We followed the order of the conventional title sequence. Our title sequence goes as followed:
