Saw is a great example of a thriller opener as it uses all of the conventions of a film opening.

 This opening had built a lot of tension through the use of camera, sound, editing & mise-en-scene. Editing such as blur and zooming out were used to demonstrate the confusion the man was feeling. Tension was built through the cutting edge and amplified diegetic sounds used. The film is set in a grim, dirty and dark bathroom.
From this opening, the audience can understand that two men are trapped in a bathroom with a man in the middle who had shot himself - but the audience do not know why they are there. They will be keen to find out what is happening as they are now hooked to the film.
