Evaluation: Question 1

In this clip i have annotated our thriller opening 'Two Minds' in terms of what aspects we have  followed from a conventional film opening and title sequence. Before we created our opening we did some research and looked at these forms and conventions.

The Forms & Conventions of Film Openings:

  • Leaves us asking questions about what will happen
  • Shows us the title sequence
  • The company identity and logo
  • Title of the film
  • An introducing to the main character
  • An introducing to the setting/location
  • Communicates the genre to the audience
  • Narrative/storyline/plot introduced
  • Intertexuality - references
  • Classic opening structure, narrative opening, discrete, stand alone titles
  • Music/sound, creates mood and atmosphere
The Conventions of the title sequences:

A title sequences has a conventional order itself and the things to consider in these sequences are the types of fonts commonly used, the use of transitions and effects, the use of colour, and the pace and flow of the titles. The order is based on contractual dealings (who is the most important). The film name usually appears after the mega stars, however in our thriller opening we decided to put our title at the end as it created a more dramatic effect. It made sense to put ti at the end as it flowed with the opening and showed suspence....If there are no mega stars, the title of the film follows the distribution company.

Here is the conventional order of a title sequence:

  • Production Company Identity
  • Distribution Company Identity
  • Distribution Company Title
  • Production Company Title
  • Actor 1 (Star!)
  • Actor 2 (Star!)
  • Film Title
  • Actor 3
  • Actor 4
  • "
  • "
  • "
  • Casting
  • Costume
  • Music Supervisor
  • Music by
  • Edited by
  • Production Designer
  • Director of Photography
  • Executive Producer
  • Written by
  • Director

This is the Title sequence of our opening. We followed the order of the conventional title sequence. Our title sequence goes as followed:

  • Production Company Identity
  • Distribution Compnay Identity
  • Distribution Company Title
  • Production Company Title
  • Actor 1: Fahmida Begum
  • Actor 2: James Muir
  • Actor 3: Alex Smith
  • Actor 4: Lynne Sharper
  • Actor 5: Terry Allen
  • Crew
  • Casting by: Tyler Camino
  • Costume Designer: Fahmida Begum

Question 2.

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SCIAL GROUPS?

This is a prezi explaining the social groups represented in our opening.

Question 3.

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA RODUCT AND WHY?

This is a powerpoint explaining who might distribute our film.

Question 4.

WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?

I interviewed 5 people asking them the following questions:
  1. Do you like thrillers?
  2. What types of thrillers do you like?
  3. What age do you think thrillers are aimed at?
  4. What do you think of psychological thrillers?
  5. What makes a good psychological thriller?
As I asked students aged 16-18, it allowed me to gain their opinions on thrillers. This was helpful as my thriller's target audience was 16-35 year olds. Psychological thrillers usually have an audience of 16+ which is what influenced our storyline, mise en scene etc.
Our thriller was filmed and edited to suit an audience of 16-35 year olds.

Question 5.

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?

Our thriller is a psychological thriller aimed at 16+ year olds. As this is our target audience, we used younger actors rather than older ones as they'd appeal to the lower spectrum as well as the older. Our storyline would keep an audience of this age interested and wanting to watch the entire film. Through interviews, I gathered that 16-18 year olds would only continue watching the film if there were twists in the plot and they had to figure aspects of the film out themselves. The title of our film is simple, therefore our target audience will have an idea of the plot and decide if they want to watch it or not.
When we showed our rough cut to our peers, we realised that not many of them understood the plot, therefore we changed our target audience to an older age. We also noticed that our thriller appealed more to males because of the violent and mysterious plot.
Prior to the cinema screening, we gained an audience through twitter and Facebook. This was successful as our target audience tend to use these websites a lot. We also advertised our film on YouTube and in class.

Question 6.

Question 7.

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIM TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

Evaluation: Question 1

The thriller which we created followed the forms & conventions of film openings, as well as follwing the conventioanl order of a title sequence well. The clip below is a quick talk through of some of the conventions followed.

Before we began to create a thriller opening, we had to do research in the way most film openings are as this would help make our thriller opening more effective and realistic. From my research, I found that most film openings consisted of the following forms and conventions:
·         A title sequence
·         Production & distribution ident
·         Introduction to main character
·         Introduction to setting/location
·         Genre is established through the use of technical work eg music
·         Narrative/plot/storyline is introduced
·         Intertextual elements/references
·         Music/sound used to set the mood and atmosphere
·         Has a classic, narrative, discrete or standalone structure

As part of our research, we also looked at the order of title sequences and found that the titles would always appear in the same order. The order is based on contractual dealings and who is the most important. The titles are placed in the following order:
  • Production company ident
  • Production company titles
  • Distribution company ident
  • Distribution company title
  • Other production companies
  • Cast (main actors/actresses)
  • Film title
  • Cast
  • Casting
  • Costume
  • Music Supervisor
  • Music by
  • Editor
  • Prod design
  • Director of photography
  • Writer
  • Director
Using this research, we created our thriller opening conventionally. We had used a narrative opening structure which introduced the audience to the plot/outline of the film whilst the titles were superimposed. The two main characters and setting were also shown in the title.
The music which we used in our thriller opening was tense with a laid back element to it. This helped in setting a suspenseful atmosphere as it hints to the audience something will happen. This also helps to establish the genre of the film is a thriller.

The titles were placed in the correct order; however, we decided to place the title of the film at the end of the thriller opening rather than after the main actors’ names. This was because we found it had more of an impact if the title was shown after the close up of the eyes, as it would cut away from the expression and feelings represented by the character.

Editing: Creating Distribution company

In today's lesson, I was working on creating the distribution ident for our thriller. I used the programme Motion to create a well animated distribution ident.

I have not yet added sound to this as we will do it once we have imported it to Final Cut.

Editing Day 3 - Vlog

This is how far we are in the editing stage of our opening. Fahmida is currently creating the distribution ident, while Eugenie is editing transitions into the footage. Also, Nicole is blogging and finding appropriate foley sounds.

Editing - Vlog

Fahmida and Eugenie deciding on how the title sequence should appear. At this stage, all the footage is in the correct sequence and now we're trying to finalise our opening by adding the title sequence and sound.

Editing Process - Sound

This is the programme we are using to add sound to our opening - Soundtrack Pro.
We are using Foley sounds for the knocking of the door and the opening of the door.
We will also use this programme to find background music.

Filming: More Photos

As our thriller was too short once we had cut the clips down, we decided to get some establishing shots to add at the beginning of the title sequence in order to help make the thriller slightly longer.

Rough Cut: Feedback

Receiving feedback from peers and our teacher was crucial as we were given constructive criticism and helped us see what our thriller opening looks like to an audience so far. We were also told what was good about our opening so far.
The first thing which was picked up was the colour of the titles - red. We were told that this did not suit our opening as it is not a horror movie.
Another problem which some people encountered was actually understanding the concept of our opening. It made sense once it had been explained; however we realised that if this was to be a real thriller we would not be around to fully explain the story. Therefore, we must change some of the camera work and re-work the order of the title sequence somehow.

A strength of our opening was that we used match cuts, close ups, and other various shot type well. Also, the music accompanied the opening most of the time despite not being fully planned and synchronized.

We have taken note of this feedback and will work on fixing these errors in the coming days.

Rough Cut of 'Two Minds'

This is the rough cut of our thriller opening 'Two Minds'. We haven't added all of the titles such as production and distribution ident and we are yet to edited them in terms of font, colour, size. We have some diegetic sound on set for e.g. footsteps and the door creaking when it opens, and we are going to amplify these sounds to make them louder which we have not done yet. We have also short listed some non diegetic sound for us to add to the thriller, but we have not synchronised the sound with the film. We have no transitions at the moment, but we will had some in later when editing. As our thriller is only 1 minute, we are going to add some establishing shots in the beginning.

Editing - Title Sequence

This is the Title sequence of our opening. We followed the order of the conventional title sequence. Our title sequence goes as followed:

Actor 2: James Muir
Actor 3: Alex Smith
Actor 4: Lynne Sharper
Actor 5: Terry Allen

Editing process - Sound

This google search was to get an idea of what sounds are usually used in the opening of thrillers. Searching for this gave me an idea of what types of music and the speed of the music that is used. We will get/create sounds on Soundtrack Pro and Garage Band.

This is the programme 'Soundtrack Pro' that we will get our sounds from.

Editing Process

This is the sequence so far of the opening. All of the footage has been used and most transitions have been added. What's left to do is find a soundtrack that fits in and to add foley sound.

Editing: Titles

This is part of the process of editing for our thriller 'Two Minds'. Once we had cut and ordered the footages we needed, I worked on the adding the titles onto the film. I followed the conventional order of title sequence - something which we had researched previously.
I experimented with different fonts and colours. Although red did seem a bit weird, that was the only option we had to go for as the colours black and white were not visible on top of the film; red seemed to be the next best suitable colour.

I also began to add transitions to the texts and clips so it does not seem too straight forward and boring
